There’s something truly magical about the night sky above Robin Hood’s Bay and the surrounding North York Moors National Park. The darkness is striking due to the minimal light pollution. In urban areas you can see around 20 stars, if it were a clear night. However, in areas such as National Parks and Robin Hood's Bay there is a much lower level of light pollution and you could see as many as 2,000 stars.

The National Parks offer some of the best stargazing opportunities in the country and it is celebrated with various Dark Skies Festivals throughout the year. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Dark Skies Festival, running from 14th February to 2nd March 2025. These Festivals, held throughout the UK, have become an unmissable fixture in the stargazing calendar.
If you are staying in Robin Hoods Bay the North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales National Parks run a calendar of events, for the Dark Skies Festival, some of them in Robin Hood’s Bay itself. There are activities and events, suitable for all ages, designed to celebrate the unspoiled night skies and connect us with the awe-inspiring beauty of the universe. The North York Moors is one of only 21 locations in the world to be recognised for pristine, dark skies.
