Update: Due to a fantastic effort by North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, landowners and farmer they have contained the fire. However, flare-ups will continue for some time as the peat continues to burn under the surface. There may also be more smoke in the area due to the rain.

All driving routes are now open, including the A171 between Whitby and Scarborough and the B1416. There is a 30mph speed limit in place along some stretches of the A171. More information can be found at:

The below is an important message from Catriona McLees from the North York Moors National Park:

You'll be aware that North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service and partner agencies remain at the scene of the Langdale Forest & Fylingdales Moor wildfire and, following a large flare up, are likely to be there for some time.

Emergency road closures are in place due to heavy smoke. Please ask your visitors to not ignore these road closures, which are for everyone’s safety, and to allow the emergency services access to the area. The full list of road closures is available on the North Yorkshire Council website. If you’re in an area affected by smoke, keep windows/doors closed and avoid unnecessary outdoor activity.

The spread of the fire also means that it is impacting on the Public Rights of Way network, including the Coast to Coast and Lyke Wake Walk routes and the Moor to Sea Cycle Network. Whilst we have not yet closed the network, again please ask visitors to avoid walking or cycling in the vicinity of the affected area.

With ongoing extremely dry conditions, there’s a very high risk of fire across the rest of the National Park too. Any new fire would be a considerable stretch of resources.

The North York Moors can still be enjoyed safely, but extra caution is required. Please encourage guests and visitors to have picnics instead of barbecues or lighting campfires.

Please share our social media messages or use messaging from our press release.

Our thoughts are very much with those of you who are affected in any way by this very difficult situation. Staff at the North York Moors National Park are liaising with all the relevant authorities and will keep you updated as much as we can.

Best wishes,

Sent on behalf of Catriona McLees, North York Moors National Park
