This picturesque walk is approximately 6 miles and takes around 2-3 hours one way. Following the coastline, it provides stunning views of the cliffs and sea. You can start your journey by joining the Cleveland Way in Robin Hood’s Bay and heading towards Whitby. For your return, you can either walk back along the Cinder Track (the old railway) or take the bus from Whitby train station back to the top of the Bay.
The 6-mile circular walk to Maw Wyke takes you along the cliffs north of Robin Hood’s Bay, passing Ness Point, one of the most treacherous headlands on this coastline. Along the route, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of the North Sea and stunning cliff scenery. The route returns along the Cinder Track, which is the old railway line between Whitby and Scarborough.
This 1.5 mile walk begins in the lower Bay and follows a charming section of the Cleveland Way. It takes about an hour to complete, with a perfect halfway stop at the YHA café for refreshments. You can start on the Cleveland Way and return along the beach, or switch up your route depending on the tide times. Enjoy the stunning coastal views along the way.
Goathland is about 7 miles from Robin Hood's Bay. Known for being a filming location for the TV series Heartbeat, Goathland offers charming scenery to explore. From there, you can wander through beautiful woodlands and along the river. When you reach Mallyan Spout, take a moment to enjoy the stunning waterfall and its picturesque surroundings.
Robin Hoods Bay to Ravenscar
This 7.5 mile circular trail offers a moderately challenging walk along the Cleveland Way to Ravenscar, then descends to the beach for the return journey. Be sure to plan your trip around low tide, as the beach sections become impassable at high tide. Check the tide times before you head out. Keep an eye out for seals near Ravenscar, especially between November and March.
Hole of Horcum
This popular 7 mile circular walk starts at the Saltergate car park on the A169 and takes in the Hole of Horcum, a huge bowl-shaped depression in the ground, locally known as the “Devil's Punchbowl”. The walk takes around 4 hours and the Horseshoe pub in Levisham village is a great place to stop for refreshments. This walk provides stunning views over a mix of grassy hills, wooded areas, and fields.
Falling Foss Circular Walk
This circular 4 mile route begins at Falling Foss and takes you through beautiful woodlands, alongside the River Esk. The trail offers a mix of terrain, with stunning views and a great tea room to finish at.
For a longer walk, head from Falling Foss to Goathland. This path takes you through charming countryside and woodland, eventually leading you to the village, where you can explore its quaint shops and cafes.
Coast to Coast Walk
Devised by Alfred Wainwright the coast to coast walk is one of the most famous unofficial footpaths in the world. The 182 mile journey starts in St Bees on the west coast and finishes right by Dock Cottage, at the Bay Hotel in Robin Hood’s Bay. Wainwrights guide is in the cottage if you feel inspired.
