Goathland is approximately 7 miles from Robin Hood's Bay, making it a perfect stop for a day trip. You can enjoy the charming village, famous as a filming location for the TV series Heartbeat, before embarking on your walk to Mallyan Spout. There are several spots to grab a snack or lunch, and afterward, you can meander through beautiful woodlands to the waterfall. The walk is about 3 miles, taking around 2 hours, and is moderately challenging, featuring some ups and downs as well as rocky scrambles. It's best to avoid this route in wet weather due to slippery conditions.

Mallyan Spout Waterfall cascades down a lush green forest cliff. A person stands at the base, looking up. Sunlight filters through the trees, creating a serene mood.

Directions

1. Start at Goathland: Head towards the Mallyan Spout Hotel on the A169 road.

2. Kissing Gate: Just opposite the church and to the right of the hotel, you'll find a kissing gate with signs for Mallyan Spout.

3. Descent: Follow the path down into the wooded valley until you reach a signpost next to West Beck. Take a left here.

4. Scramble to the Waterfall: You’ll encounter a rocky area where you’ll need to scramble to reach Mallyan Spout. Be cautious, as the rocks can be slippery when wet, but the waterfall is especially impressive after rain.

5. Return to Signpost: After enjoying the waterfall, retrace your steps back to the signpost where you initially turned left and continue straight ahead, following the signs to Beck Hole.

6. Beck Hole Cottage: Continue along the path until you reach a cottage at the bottom of the old railway incline in Beck Hole. Take a right here.

7. Gravel Path: Follow the gravel path uphill toward Goathland.

8. Cross the Road: When you reach the road, cross straight over. The path will lead you onto another road.

9. Village Center: Keep to the right and continue until you reach the center of the village.
