This scenic walk from Robin Hood's Bay along the coastline offers breath taking views of cliffs and the sea. The route is moderately challenging, covering about 6 miles and typically takes 2-3 hours one way.
Starting Point
Begin at the top of Robin Hood’s Bay, turning right just past the Grosvenor Inn. Look for signs for the Cleveland Way and the Cinder Track. The Cinder Track is a flatter option that provides better footing, especially after wet weather, and will also lead you to Whitby.
Follow the Path to Cleveland Way
After a short distance on the Cinder Track, fork right to join the Cleveland Way. The trail is easy to navigate and well-marked; just keep the sea on your right as you walk along the coastal path.
Landmarks Along the Way
You’ll pass through the Rocket Post Field, home to a replica of the historic rocket posts used for rescuing stranded sailors. These rockets, equipped with ropes, were launched to reach distressed ships, allowing passengers to be pulled to safety while clinging to a lifebuoy.
Trail Conditions
The route features a mix of gates and stiles, with ups and downs as it follows the coastline. Initially, the path is gravelled but later transitions to a wide, mown grass path that narrows to a single track hugging the cliffs. Be prepared for muddy sections, especially in winter, along with some steep inclines, descents, and cobbled steps. However, anyone with moderate fitness should find it manageable.
Arrival in Whitby
The walk leads you directly past Whitby Abbey, where you can take the famous 199 steps down into Whitby harbour. Treat yourself to some delicious fish and chips on the beach.

Return Options
For your return journey, you can either walk back along the flatter Cinder Track or catch a bus from Whitby train station back to the top of the Bay.
The North York Moors have put together a fantastic series of downloadable walks and this walk is featured in their 'Miles without Styles' section.
Tips:
- Footwear: Wear sturdy walking shoes, as some sections may be steep, uneven and muddy in the winter.
- Weather: Check the forecast and dress in layers, as coastal weather can change quickly.
-Safety: Stay on marked paths and be cautious near the cliff edges (especially with dogs).
- Dogs: Keep dogs on leads on any unfenced areas on the Cleveland way. On the Cinder Track just be mindful to put dogs on a lead when cyclists pass.
