Robin Hood’s Bay is beautiful, especially when the sun is shining. But as we all know, the British weather isn’t always sunshine and blue skies. So, I thought I’d put together some ideas on what to do in Robin Hood’s Bay with children when it’s raining.
Whatever the weather, Robin Hood’s Bay still holds plenty of magic, you might just need your wellies and waterproofs at the ready! Here’s your guide to rainy day adventures with children in and around the Bay.

1. Start with the Dinosaur and Fossil Shop
Just a few steps from Dock Cottage is the Dinosaur and Fossil Shop. This little treasure trove is always a hit with children. Packed with fossils, shells, and even dinosaur skeletons, it’s a brilliant way to bring the area’s Jurassic history to life. They also sell small gems and pocket-money treats—perfect souvenirs to take back to the cottage.
2. Make a Splash – Embrace the Weather
If the rain isn’t too heavy, grab your waterproofs, pop on your wellies, and head to the beach, it’s just seconds from Dock Cottage. Rainy beach adventures can be the best kind as you have the beach to yourself. Children can run along the sand, explore the rock pools, and hunt for fossils and jet. Just don’t forget to check the tide times before you head out.
3. Climb the Hill with a Playground Promise
If the weather is just drizzling why not venture to the playground at the top. With a huge wooden ship to climb and explore, the perfect spot to burn off any extra energy, rain or shine.
4. Explore the Robin Hood’s Bay Museum
Tucked in the heart of the village, the Robin Hood’s Bay Museum is a brilliant place to duck into when it starts to rain. Discover tales of smugglers, shipwrecks, and old fishing life through hands-on, family-friendly displays. It’s free to enter (donations are welcome) and compact enough to keep young children engaged without it feeling too much. Don’t forget to pick up an activity sheet to keep the kids entertained as they explore. The museum is run by volunteers so check opening times before you head out.
5. Pop Into the Old Coastguard Station
Run by the National Trust and just across from Dock Cottage, the Old Coastguard Station is full of interactive displays about the local coastline. It is free to enter and the displays are upstairs. There’s also a cosy café where you can sip hot chocolate and look out to sea with the binoculars, perfect for a bit of wildlife spotting in the dry.
6. Head Out for Lunch
There’s nothing better than escaping the rain with a hearty lunch. The Bay Hotel (right opposite the cottage) offers great children’s meals and a fire to warm up beside. Try to grab a window seat to watch the waves crashing against the sea wall. For a relaxed café vibe, pop next door to Tea, Toast and Post, or head over to The Cove for glorious sea views, excellent coffee, and homemade cakes. Bring along a game from the cottage to keep the kids entertained.
7. Visit the Robin Hood’s Bay Bookshop
Have a little digital detox and wander into this lovely independent bookshop, tucked away in the cobbled streets, just near the Cove. Let everyone pick out a new book, then head back to Dock Cottage to snuggle up by the fire and get lost in a story. Don't forget to pop into Dollies Sweet shop or Browns on the way back for a sweat treat to go with your book.
8. Enjoy a Rainy Day Retreat at Dock Cottage
Rainy days were made for cosy cottage vibes. Dock Cottage is well stocked with board games, puzzles, and books to keep the whole family entertained. You can log into your own Amazon, Netflix, or Sky account and enjoy a movie afternoon with hot chocolate and popcorn—or simply sit by the window and watch the waves roll in.
9. Day Trip: Beacon Farm Ice Cream Parlour & Tea Rooms
Just outside Whitby, Beacon Farm is a fantastic family-run tearoom and ice cream parlour. Even in the rain, their homemade dairy ice cream is a real holiday treat. The ice cream is made on-site using Yorkshire milk and cream, with over 20 delicious flavours to choose from—including sorbets. It’s worth the drive, whatever the weather.
10. Hop on the Steam Train in Goathland
Fancy a little trip out? The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is a brilliant rainy-day activity. Departing from Goathland station (a must for Harry Potter fans—it’s Hogsmeade in the films), this heritage steam train ride is atmospheric and fun for all ages, especially when the moors are wrapped in mist.
11. Head to Alpamare Waterpark in Scarborough
If you fancy something a bit more splash-tastic and wet, Alpamare in Scarborough is a brilliant option for a rainy day. It's more than just a waterpark—there’s something for everyone here:
A fun wave pool
A relaxing warm outdoor garden pool
A dedicated splash and play area for little ones
A breathtaking outdoor infinity pool (yes, even in the rain!)
And four exciting waterslides for thrill-seekers
It’s perfect for burning off some energy, whatever the weather’s doing outside. Just bring your swimwear and a sense of adventure.
Handy Tips for Rainy Day Exploring
Bring Wellies or Beach Shoes – The beach is stunning, but often wet and rocky.
Pack Waterproofs – You’ll thank yourself later (but remember: skin is waterproof too!).
Check the Tide Times – Always worth a quick look before heading out to the beach.
Don’t Let the Rain Stop You!
Rainy days in Robin Hood’s Bay can be some of the most special. Whether you're puddle-jumping, uncovering fossils, or curled up in front of the fire with a good book, there’s always something lovely to do. Embrace the slower pace, enjoy the cosy moments, and make memories—whatever the weather.
